As the old adage goes, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And if youre going on a lengthy bike ride, that makes a lot of sense. To keep yourself comfortable and safe and avoid getting caught in any frustrating situations its important to be prepared before you set out.

Since it will be such a crucial part of your ride, your backpack itself should be an investment. Look for one made especially for cyclists. Such packs are made of durable, lightweight, weather-proof materials. Ideally, your pack should have adjustable waist and chest straps and a ventilated back. Some even contain compression systems to prevent the contents from shifting and rattling during your ride, and hydration packs to hold large amounts of water and allow for hands-free drinking. Such features are optional; nice, but not absolutely necessary.

Riding takes a lot of stamina, especially in warmer weather. You will need plenty of water, and you may want to throw in some sports drinks for sodium replenishment. If possible, arrange to ride along a path where there will be opportunities to refill your water supply if necessary. Pack one sports bar or piece of fruit bananas are great for cyclists for every hour you plan to ride, plus one or two extras just in case youre out longer than you planned (or one of your companions isnt so well prepared).

In case of bike malfunction, youll want to carry some tools. To save space, consider carrying a multi-tool. These handy all-in-one tools contain everything you need to fix common problems on the road: Allen wrenches, Phillips and flat-blade screwdriver heads, spoke wrenches and chain tools. Throw in a patch kit, tire lever, a small bottle of chain lube, and a spare tube and youre covered (inspect the spare for damage before each ride, especially if its been in your pack for a while). Make sure you know how to use all the tools properly, though; theyll do you no good if you cant figure out what to do with them! You can carry a guide with you, even if its just a few tips scribbled on index cards, outlining bicycle repair basics (such as fixing a flat) if you have trouble remembering. Being prepared for a malfunction doesnt just include problems with the bike it includes everything from inclement weather to emergencies to personal discomforts. Pack a cell phone (ensure that its fully charged first!) or a phone card. It doesnt hurt to carry a few dollars, and maybe a couple quarters as well. A lightweight, foldable hooded jacket or poncho will protect your clothing from an unexpected downpour. Make yourself a laminated card with your name, address, telephone number and emergency contact numbers, and put it in a place where it can be easily spotted. Pack a bottle of waterproof, high-SPF sunscreen travel-sized if youre short on space so that you can reapply as needed, and a tube of protective lip balm such as Chap-Stick. You may also want to carry a tube of sports cream to relieve on-the-road muscle aches and stiff joints, some Band-Aids and antibiotic cream for cuts and scrapes, and a travel-sized pack of tissues or baby wipes.

Whatever the contents of your biking pack, unload it and check everything out periodically for expiration dates, breakage, leakage, or other general problems. Bumping around in a backpack, or being stored for long periods of time, can eventually wreak havoc on your supplies. Make sure everything is in good working order!

Types of Tires

Almost 99% of the bicycles have the clincher kind of tires. The clincher tires consist of an outer tire with a cross section which has a typical U shape while there is another inner tube within the tire. Apart from these parts there are three key parts which create the tire. The first part is the Bead which is basically the rim of the tire. Normally, the beads contain hoops which are made up of steel wires which are very strong. The second very important part is the fabric. Tire manufacturers weave this cloth fabric between two beads to make the basic framework of the tire. The third major portion is the rubber. Rubber is used as an outer layer to the fabric. Rubber is used only after the basic framework is complete.

Apart from the clinchers, the bicycles also have wheels which are known as tubular tires. Unlike the clinchers, the tubular tires do not have any beads. In the tubular tires, the two rims of the tires are actually stitched together around the inner tube.

Other Tire Aspects

Bicycle tires have a part called traction. This traction is basically the resistance capacity of the tires which avoid skidding or slipping. Another very important aspect of bicycle wheels is the width and pressure of the bicycle wheels. The width and pressure of the wheels are inversely proportional. This implies that if the width of the wheel is greater then it has a low pressure and if the width is not very wide then it has a high pressure. Also generally, the wheels are made up of two basic types of rubber, namely natural latex rubber and butyl.

There are several other points apart form the features mentioned above. However, these are the most important features which make up the basic framework of the wheels of the bicycle and without which the wheels cannot work.

A bike is a wonderfully elegant creation-true technological genius.

A well-made bike can take you thouss of trouble-free miles. When it does break down, even the most mechanically challenged can repair it. The near universality of bikes-even in countries like Bangladesh-means parts skilled repairmen are readily available-at reasonable rates.

I use a 21-speed Norco with DX gearing a light frame, a pannier rack on the rear with two panniers, mud guards on rear front, bell, two water bottles with corresponding attachment points, flat bars with extension grips, a bike lock, reflectors, a tool kit (see below), a helmet, biking shoes, a spare inner tube, biking gloves.

ASIDE: With the exception of the extension bars I strongly recommend all this equipment-the bell helmet are legislated in some countries. Extension bars are only required if you purchase a mountain or hybrid bike-they allow you to hunker down, making you more streamlined. A road bike does not require the extension bars. DX refers to Shimano’s middle cost range for bike gearing-not bad but not the best.

My Norco is a hybrid-a cross between a road bike a mountain bike. A limited budget with a desire for flexibility-to ride on paved roads in wilderness areas-made the purchase of a hybrid clear to me. The cost for the bike listed accessories was $780 CDN-still about the same in 2006.

ASIDE: I never rode my bike on any rough terrain, always on paved or good gravel roads. I never regretted my selection used the same bike on other long-distance tours as well as around my hometown-to this very day.

I will not get technical about bikes but will give you some sound advice. Get as much bike as you can afford but never buy a cheap one-medium- to high-quality only. Cheap department store bikes cannot take the punishment of a long-distance tour you will have nothing but problems-problems that will eat at your soul pocketbook. The threshold for medium bikes varies, with a bottom of around $350 (US or CDN dollars). Spending more, if you can afford it, makes very good sense, as a good bike will last for decades.

ASIDE: Expensive bikes are attractive targets for thieves all over the world. If you do buy one, you’ll have to be more vigilant than you might like-certainly extra security precautions are in order.

A few words about accessories:

Biking shoes are a good buy even if you only plan one long-distance tour in your life. They are constructed with a steel shank, which means you can impart more energy into your pedaling-the shank reduces the flexing of a normal shoe or runner. Biking shoes reduce the strain on your feet, happy feet are good things to have on a long trip.

Biking gloves make those hundreds of miles easier on the hs. Even on paved roads ( certainly off-road) there can be a lot of jarring. You can get the ones that enclose the whole h or the ones that leave the fingers free. Either type is good as long as they have good thick padding in the palms.

One thing that I didn’t bring on my first trip was a pair of proper biking shorts. This was a very big painful mistake-don’t go without proper bike shorts. The Lycra type with thick padding in the crotch bum areas is the best.

I didn’t bring a bike computer the first time. Get one as you will want to know how far how fast you are going. Using the bike computer in conjunction with a daily mileage log will help you plan your itinerary-point to point- of course will allow you to exactly state how many hundreds of miles your journey has taken you.

Panniers (portable suitcases for bikes) fit on either side of your back rack. Do not go cheap on them as they are carrying all your worldly goods. Bring small garbage bags to stuff your clothes into-then into the pannier-as well as Ziplocs for your food, because panniers are water-resistant but not waterproof.

Front rear fenders may not look chic but they are extremely effective at preventing water/mud going up your back or in your face.

I strongly recommend that you bring a small bike tool kit. Most bike stores sell these kits. They usually consist of four or five Allen wrenches (hex heads), a fork pedal wrench, a tire repair kit, a spoke wrench. I augment the kit with a plastic bottle of bike grease for the chain, a chain breaker to join the chain together if it breaks, a bike pump, two spare spokes, a spare inner tube. A small book on basic bike repair would be advisable-there are plenty of those around. Bike repair is not rocket science is very easy to learn do.

The need for a water bottle should be obvious to anyone but the need for two may not. The more water you have drink the less dehydrated you will be. Dehydration can be a serious health risk-especially when you are exerting yourself. Even low levels of dehydration can affect your strength , therefore, your pedaling speed. Two bottles /or a Camelback give you enough water to maintain hydration between stops.

If the nose of the saddle is discomforting the rider should be able to tilt the saddle slightly to the right or the left.

Moving on or off the saddle can help avoiding constant pressure and discomfort. Also, while climbing over a plateau you can stand up and pedal for short periods of time because this ensures proper blood circulation through the body.

Cultivating good habits can ease your riding on the road. Trying to seat yourself on the wider area of the saddle is one good habit. Also, the use of shock-absorbing seats for better comfort is considered to be a good habit. It is recommended not to overload yourself with unnecessary backpacks because it only increases the difficulty of adjusting weight making posture. The same problem can be experienced by obese people.

Also, the physical strength ability to handle bike skillfully, knowledge of traffic laws are the four important requirements for safe cycling. For each of these requirements the cyclist must lay some effort. But in the long run, these skills will stand him in good stead.

When you start running, you get running shoes, right? And when you play basketball you wear basketball shoes. Golfers wear golf shoes, and tennis players wear tennis shoes. Cycling is no different. There are a number of shoes made for bike riders and plenty of shoes that aren’t specifically made for bike riding but work well, nonetheless.

Most people can get by riding their bikes wearing almost any kind of athletic shoes. Tennis, basketball, running, cross-training, etc. will work just fine for the average rider. As long as they have a good sole on them they’ll be fine. It’s important to wear shoes with a good grip because you don’t want your feet to slip and knock your shins off the pedals, which can hurt pretty bad and cause you to wreck and do even more damage to yourself. Another thing to consider is the stiffness of the sole. A relatively stiff sole allows you to keep more of your foot in contact with the pedal, which, in turn, gives you more power. Shoes made for skateboarding are especially well-suited for the recreational rider, as well as BMX riding and freestyling.

Will you be doing most of your riding on the road or off? This is an important consideration as it will affect your choice in shoes. If you’re going to be doing a lot of mountain biking then you should wear relatively sturdy shoes with rugged soles. A solid pair of skateboarding shoes will usually work pretty well for this kind of riding, but you should also consider light hiking boots or trail-running shoes. These are good for mountain biking because they provide above average traction, are sturdily built, and are often water-resistant, which can come in handy when you’re blasting though mud puddles.

If you’re an avid or competitive cyclist, then you’re probably already familiar with the most popular sort of shoe for this kind of riding. Professional-grade cycling shoes feature clips on the bottom which lock into specially made pedals. A quick flick of the ankle will release the shoe, but they’re held firm during normal riding so your feet don’t lose contact with the pedal, which robs the racer of precious power. Clip-on shoes allow you to generate power as your feet are pushing down and raising up, which is quite an advantage over regular shoes. Clip-ons are not generally recommended for mountain biking because you frequently have to take your feet off the pedals to deal with difficult terrain.

Cycling is a great way to get into shape. It’s easy to adjust the activity to each rider’s level of fitness and interest. If you’re just getting into cycling you already know that your choice in equipment is important. Don’t forget that what you wear while riding is important, too. Part of that consideration are your shoes. A good pair will serve you well and help keep you from getting hurt.

The Cycling Pro Tour of Lombardy was raced during last Saturday, 14th October. After the 245 kilometers traveled, in the one-day race, the winner was the World and Olympic Champion, Paolo Bettini, also known as Il Grillo (the products at Amazon.com’>cricket) for his sprinting style.

Bettini reached the line with eyes full of tears, as he pointed to the sky and kissed his rainbow jersey. But his tears weren’t only for the joy of winning his ninth race for the 2006 season; it was the nostalgia for the recent loss of one of the people that supported him all his live.

Sauro Bettini (42), Paolo’s older brother was killed in a car accident near La California-Bibbona in Italy, on October 2nd, 2006.

Il Grillo admitted on Friday that following his brother’s accident, he even considered withdrawing from the races, but his father convinced him to stay in the tracks and to compete on this tour.

After winning the world title, I was still on in shape, but I wasn’t sure how mentally strong I was, said Paolo.

Paolo was the first to attack at the Madonna del Ghisallo climb, at 45km distance from the end, and attacked again in the climb of Civiglio 18km away from the finish line at Lake Como.

On the twisted descending it seemed he was worn-out and for a moment was caught by the German, Fabian Wegmann. But at San Fermo della Battaglia climb, Bettini attacked one more time and left his adversaries behind him.

The Spanish, Samuel Sanchez grasped the second place and Wegmann the third.

The Giro di Lombardia was as exciting as it was expected, celebrated a 100 years of competitions and gave an excellent closure to the 2006 European products at Amazon.com’>cycling season.

But for anyone wasn’t as important as it was for Paolo Il Grillo Bettini, as due to this race, and especially with his conquest, he honored his beloved Sauro.

During the race, I felt good and so decided I wanted to win to remember Sauro… I wasn’t riding on my own today… The person who used to cheer me from the roadside can’t do it anymore, but he was with me today. I didn’t win by chance, explained Il Grillo.
